Owen Marshall wrote the short story collection: ââ¬ËPrince Valiantââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËThe Fat Boyââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËMr Van Goghââ¬â¢, and ââ¬ËThe Ace of Diamonds Gangââ¬â¢, approximately several years, he decided to concentrate on his writing to illustrate the key important ideas or conflicts in society of overcoming ostracism. His collection of ostracizing stories stood out for me because relationships are very important to our day to day lives as we are constantly interacting with different people among our society. We read about his stories in first person and second person, which makes it appear simple on the surface, yet it still contains complex and structured ideas. Owen Marshall was raised up in a family in which the world of literature and that of physical experience were equally valued. I chose ââ¬ËPrince Valiantââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËThe Fat Boyââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËMr Van Goghââ¬â¢, and ââ¬ËThe Ace of Diamonds Gangââ¬â¢ short stories. I chose these because they all revolve around a similar idea: Ostracization. We can know more about relationships, to get a better understanding through short-stories about important characters. Many people in the town think this character is strange and often tease him/her. Whether this is the conflict of morals seen in ââ¬ËThe Fat Boyââ¬â¢ or the struggle to retain sanity displayed in ââ¬ËThe Ace of Diamonds Gangââ¬â¢. Owen Marshall is suggesting to society that ostracizing differences is harmful, both physically and, more importantly, psychologically.
